Foundation Surprises Teachers with Grants
The Plano ISD Education Foundation made surprise visits to 111 teachers in their classrooms on November 13 to present $66,000 in 56 grants for innovative instructional programs. Read grant descriptions and about the grant program.
Day School for Deaf Earns International Honor
The Plano Regional Day School Program for the Deaf heard great news this year. The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an international organization, presented the Day School with its “2007 Program of the Year Award.”
Teacher Awarded by World Affairs Council
Nicole Vickerman, Clark High School World Geography Team Leader, has been honored as runner up for the “International Educator” award by the Dallas/Ft. Worth World Affairs Council. She was recognized at the Council’s awards luncheon held in September, which featured Author Thomas Friedman, New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner.
School Trustee Honored by State Peers
Plano ISD School Trustee Mary Beth King was recently presented the 2008 Celebration of Leadership Award for outstanding alumni of Leadership TASB, a training program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards.
Five Music Groups Win National Awards
Five Plano ISD music ensembles have been recognized as national winners by Choice Music Events, which has published the results of its 2008 Mark of Excellence/ National Wind Band and Choral Honors Project contests. Representing a record number of national winners in this competition for Plano ISD are the following outstanding performing ensembles.
Academic Diversity Specialist Awarded
Plano ISD Academic Diversity Specialist Donna Hartman captured the “Educator of the Year” award presented on October 11 at the annual scholarship banquet of the Plano Community Forum, a local organization that supports cultural enrichment and educational opportunities.
‘Superior Achievement’ Financial Rating
The Texas Education Agency took a close look at Plano ISD’s financial accountability and budget data and gave the district its highest rating of “Superior Achievement” for the fifth consecutive year. The rating indicates that Plano ISD is accountable not only for student learning, but also for achieving superb results cost effectively and efficiently.
Middle School Spanish Program Supports 400 Students in Earning College Credit
Since 2004, Plano ISD's Middle School Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish program has supported 400 eighth grade students by preparing them for the national AP Spanish exam and increasing their overall academic and extra-curricular achievement.
'Head Start' Earns National Gold Certificate
Plano ISD Head Start program students and staff celebrated this week earning a "Gold Certificate" from federal auditors who found the program in 100% compliance with 800 national standards for early childhood development, health education, family services, partnerships and finances.
2008 Holiday Art Contest Underway
"Let's Celebrate!" is the theme for the 2008 Plano ISD Holiday Greeting Card Art Contest. All Plano ISD students are invited to enter their original artwork.
