Safety
& Security
Plano
ISD has adopted as one of its goals the commitment to provide a
safe
and secure environment for students, staff and visitors.
In an effort to accomplish this goal
the district provides a comprehensive security program.
The
district safety program is designed to provide
students, staff and visitors with facilities that
meet or exceed standards in fire safety, air quality,
hazardous materials management, chemical
safety and building safety.
Safety & Security Program
Plano ISD's comprehensive safety and security program includes:
- Uniformed police officers
to provide traffic control on campuses where there
is an indicated need.
- Uniformed
police officers to provide security and law enforcement
services at campuses, athletic events
and after hours special events such as socials and
dances.
- Police
liaison officers assigned to secondary campuses
with a goal of establishing a rapport between students
and uniformed police. The officers also serve as
counselors and instructors on matters
involving law enforcement.
- The Crime Stopper program is operated by the North Texas Crime Commission with the assistance of the school liaison officers. This program provides an anonymous process for students to make reports about criminal activity. It is designed to teach them the need for citizen involvement in reporting and preventing criminal offenses while protecting the student's identity.
- K-9 interdiction service where specially-trained
dogs inspect schools and parking lots for the presence
of alcohol, drugs or explosive weapons. The dogs
are used to inspect cars, lockers, classrooms
and common areas.
- Video surveillance systems in
all schools help administrators monitor activities
and provide record
of events in halls, cafeterias, gyms, parking
lots and other public areas of the campus.
- On-line electronic
access control systems help provide a secure environment
by limiting access to those
persons with a legitimate need to be in the building.
- Portable radios allow administrators and staff to communicate
about what is happening anywhere
on the campus at any given time.
- Computerized
intrusion and fire alarms protect all district facilities.
- Panic alarms are located at selected sites throughout the district.
- Criminal History searches are performed on all applicants
for employment, all persons
who volunteer in the schools and all
contractors who work on district property.
- Security police specialists in each of the district's
three clusters manage security, police and safety
needs.
- The safety and security department provides training for
all district staff on safety, security, gang prevention
and related issues.
Emergency Procedures
PISD has comprehensive emergency
procedure plans in place. The department of security
police services
works closely with each campus and local public
safety agencies on contingency planning. This
partnership stands ready to address any situation that
may
arise.
